Your day out at Castle Acre

If you fancy yourself a bit of a history buff, then your day out at Castle Acre awaits you and must be on the top of your list when visiting Norfolk.

Castle Acre Priory

Begin your day out at Castle Acre with one of the most famous of Norfolk’s historical attractions; Castle Acre Priory. Grab a leaflet which will guide you around the preserved 1090 site which was home to the first cloister monks in England. Take a walk around the priory buildings, restored herb gardens and visit the exhibits on offer.

Castle Acre

The next stop on your day out at Castle Acre and located half a mile from the Priory is the rural village Castle Acre. Here you will find a Norman settlement which includes a castle, church and village. Founded just after the Battle of Hastings you will be able to step back into the rich history of the area on your day out at Castle Acre.

Bailey Gate

After you have explored the castle continue your day out at Castle Acre by visiting the Bailey Gate. The gate is one of two gates added to the site’s defences back in 1200 and the main road to the village still runs between these very two towers. It really is one not to be missed on your day out at Castle Acre.

Castle Acre Village

Centred around a beautiful village green you will be able to grab a bite to eat at Castle Acre in the village. Here you will find a local pub, café and shops. Once refreshed you are ready to continue with your historical day out at Castle Acre.

Castle Rising Castle

If you are not ready to finish your day out at Castle Acre, then hop back into the car and drive just 11 miles to Castle Rising Castle. It is one of England’s most decorated keeps and was home to Queen Isabella (a rumoured murderer!) and Edward II. Have a look at where they would have lived and imagine yourself being served in the Great Hall!

As the sun goes down on your day out at Castle Acre, you will truly be able to appreciate how Castle Acre is one of Norfolk’s most treasured heritage sites.
