Or rather, we have listed some of the best placed eating houses in the north of the County – as suggested by ourselves, friends and the general population of East Anglia and beyond. You won’t regret trying out any – or all – of these spots, we’re sure. Here’s where the locals eat in North Norfolk.
Frary Brothers kiosk, Wells-next-the-Sea
Looking for dressed crab, fresh from the sea and against the picturesque backdrop of the local harbour and creek? Then go no further than the Frary Brothers kiosk. They have their own crab and lobster boat so forget air miles and embrace fully fresh seafood.
Wells Crab House, Wells-next-the-Sea
Well, actually, after you’ve had that dressed crab, you may then want to check out the Wells Crab House. Sitting just by the quayside, you’ll find the most gorgeous oysters served with a seaweed gin. Or, if you’re still feeling hungry, go for the whole seafood platter.
Socius, Burnham Market
A relatively newcomer to the popular Burnham Market scene, Socius is a popular provider of tapas. Look out for favourites such as mackerel and anchovy mayonnaise or roast aubergine burrata with garlic pesto. Better still, you’ll love the vibrant, colourful atmosphere.
Drove Orchards and Yurt
Phil Milner does an excellent fresh curry at his lovely relaxing yurt where there’s a great laid-back vibe and wood burner. If you’re lucky, you might even arrive on an evening when there’s live music.
Wiveton Bell, Wiveton
An award-winning gastropub, which has its place in the 2022 Michelin Guide, the Wiveton Bell does an amazing three course meal for £30. Mains include pan fried Skrei cod and colourful winter squash risotto. The pub recently received a Bib Gourmand award for ‘good quality ad good value cooking’.
The Orange Tree, Thornham
Located on Peddars Way in the village of Thornham, close to the Norfolk Coast Path (so it’s an excellent treat after a fair amount of hiking), you’ll find quality produce in this award-winning pub. There’s an outdoors terrace where you can sample the delights of the award-winning Wild Seabass and Norfolk Razor Clams dish.
The Victoria Inn, Holkham
The ‘Vic Inn’ is early 19th-century coaching inn, run by the Holkham Estate. The restaurant offers fresh and seasonal dishes, based on lamb and pork from the estate’s tenant farms or venison from the resident herd of fallow deer. Choose from such delicious delights as Sirloin steak, truffle & parmesan fries, garden salad & hollandaise sauce or Pan roasted monkfish, sautéed artichoke, celeriac puree & smoked prawn sauce.
