We’d bet every parent knows a trains-mad child. So why not delight them with a trip to Norfolk’s hidden treasure, the Poppy Line? Even better, all kids under 5 go free!
The Best Way to Ride
While you can just hop to the closest stop if you’re short on time, the best way to spend the day on the Poppy Line is by buying a roving ticket, which allows you to ride up and down all day long, and gives you the freedom to visit the beautiful beaches surrounding each station.
Sheringham Station
Situated in the quaint seaside resort, the Sheringham Station offers a great experience before a single steam train even enters. They have a 1950’s waiting room, with gift shop and buffet, a restored signal box and an activity coach just for children.
Weybourne Station
The first stop after you’ve gone through Sheringham’s spectacular scenery. This carries on the gorgeous vintage theme with its Edwardian style waiting room, buffet and gift shop, picnic areas and gardens. But the real treat at the station is the model railway, where you can see mini versions of the trains you’ll ride throughout the day.
Holt Station
The last on your trip is also the biggest station, with a miniature and working model railway station alongside a railway cottage and the William Marriott Museum, all about the man who built the railway all the way back in 1887. Alongside the buffet and gift shop, this pretty stop will mark the perfect end to your grand day out!
Special Events
One of the best things about the Poppy Line is the spectacular wealth of family friendly events & special trains on offer. Hop on an evening dinner, Fish and Chip Real Ale Train for a delicious treat alongside your ride. Most events have some vintage splash – like Dad’s Army Live, the 1940’s Weekend or the Spring Steam Gala. They also have plenty of events just for the kids – like a day out with Thomas the Tank Engine himself, a Halloween Week and Santa Specials.
For the big kids, they even have experience days where you can get to drive a diesel or steam train yourself!
