48 Hours in Norfolk: Best Things To Do In Norfolk
The Queen’s country retreat of Sandringham is right in the west of the county. While it may be world famous you may find it’s a bit far to travel from your base at Wymondham. But, if you do fancy a day out, and have 48 hours in Norfolk to spare, take advantage of the coastline and visit some of the RSPB reserves. You can go seal watching at Blakeney, or have fish and chips in Cromer. The Victorian town of Cromer has a wonderful pier with old-fashioned amusements on the promenade and a clifftop putting green.
Worth stopping at is nearby Holkham Hall, home to the Earls of Leicester, set in 25,000 acres. The Hall is a magnificent example of Palladian architecture and boasts a sumptuous interior which is well worth exploring.
Slightly to the West is one of the most beautiful English Heritage sites to see during your 48 Hours in Norfolk. Castle Acre Castle and Priory are thought to be one of the best preserved monastic sites in England. Although now a ruin, you get a real sense of how the monks ran the estate from 1090 up until the reign of Henry VIII who separated the monasteries and was responsible for a lot of their destruction. Today the herb garden has been recreated as a visitor centre and makes a welcome stop along the way.
The Local Area
Working your way back and nearer to Norwich during your 48 Hours in Norfolk, see the Blickling Estate, near Aylsham. It was once the childhood home of Anne Boleyn who, along with her father, is thought to haunt the estate. Don’t let that put you off though! Set in 5,000 acres, the Jacobean house, garden and parkland is one of Norfolk’s top attractions.
Nearer still to Wymondham, Oxburgh Hall is a delightful 15th Century, moated, red brick house built to impress and now owned by the National Trust. Its interiors are rich and opulent and well worth seeing so do make time to stop off either on your way out from Number 10, The Abbey, or on your way back to your serviced apartment in Wymondham while you enjoy your 48 hours in Norfolk.
